“Secret Thirteen Mix 058” is an influential and retrospective audio selection which is assembled from the 16 penetrating records released between 1986 and 2011 by such respectable and honorable musicians as DAF, Current 93, Deutsch Nepal, Mark Van Hoen and others. It is a personal and long-matured mix of lasting favourites from various music scenes.
The author of the mix is Michael Wollenhaupt, better known as Ancient Methods or Trias, a German techno music artist and DJ. Ancient Methods was a duo, but recently they have separated. Since middle 00's Ancient Methods has released a bunch of internationally acclaimed records mainly on its own label (Ancient Methods) and RSB. Wollenhaupt has worked with such noticeable musicians as Adam X, Kareem, Regis. At least there is not very much information about him except that his project is gradually growing beside another raw techno giants.
“Secret Thirteen Mix 058” is a passionately selected timeless musical compilation that is built on smooth rhythmical background, sentimental melodies and mesmerizing vocals. Works included in this mix vary among numerous different music styles such as acoustic, ambient, industrial, neofolk, new wave and tribal. The developing is calm, every piece has enough time to expand and unfold completely. Starting from the flowing ambience and subtle electronics and continuing with lively recorded compositions till the organic noise culmination, this selection reveals its complex but very thrilling background. The palette of sounds is more than kaleidoscopic and requires patience, absorption and empathy to hear it fully and perceive. The mixing is strict, but with the emotional and ideological exposure. It is a mixture of archaic synthesizer sounds, suggestive rhythm patterns, provocative and sarcastic lyrics that truly evoke melancholic and sometimes even anarchistic feelings. This mix indirectly reflects the influences of Ancient Methods personal sound that usually varies among brutal and intense beats, sublime and uncovered harmonies arrangement.
“Secret Thirteen Mix 058” is like a vague Günther Förg's abstract art painting “Untitled” where heavily-dyed almost exclusively black monochrome structure figuratively invites each of us to explore the obscurity of our lives and minds, significance of surrounding reality and discuss questions about existentialism and truthfulness.

An der Stelle, an der ein Großteil der Produzenten elektronischer Tanzmusik eine Clap oder Snare unterbringen, die zum fröhlichen Tanz mit den Liebsten einlädt, ist bei ANCIENT METHODS ein Geräusch zu finden, welches wie der Schlag eines überdimensionierter Hammers, der einen dazu passenden Amboss bearbeitet, klingt und eher zu introvertierten Schweißausbrüchen führt. Und das scheint auch so beabsichtigt zu sein. Seitdem ANCIENT METHODS 2007 – damals noch als Zwei-Mann-Projekt – mit dem gleichnamigen Label an die Öffentlichkeit gegangen sind, wurde eine neue akustische Ästhetik definiert, die man zwischen Techno, Dark-Wave und Power-Electronics zwar verorten könnte, der Sache damit jedoch nicht gerecht würde, weil es dann doch immer ein bisschen anders klingt. Dieser Blue-Print-Industrial-Techno ist bis heute unverändert das Erkennungsmerkmal von AM. Nicht, dass sich der Sound über die Jahre und verschiedenen Nebenprojekte – unter anderen mit REGIS (UGANDAN METHODS), ADAM-X, KAREEM, HEADLESS HORSEMAN und seit Neuestem mit ORPHX – nicht weiterentwickelt hätte, aber einem gewissen Stil wurde dennoch immer die Treue gehalten. AM hört sich bis heute viel mehr nach dem Industrial, Noise und Post-Punk der 80er Jahre an, als dies von vielen der aktuell angebotenen Industrial-Techno-Projekte behauptet werden kann, da hier nicht das Gefühl entsteht, die verstörenden Frequenzteppiche á la THROBBING GRISTLE oder HAUS ARAFNA würden zurechtgestutzt und allein dem Funktionieren der Produktion als Club-Track untergeordnet werden. Der Grund, warum es trotzdem möglich ist, zu ANCIENT METHODS zu tanzen, ist ein Repertoire aus Percussions und Drums, die wahrscheinlich irgendwann einmal von einem, bei Ausgrabungen in den Ruinen von Jericho gefundenen USB-Stick herunterkopiert worden sind.
Um den Marterpfahl gesellen sich außerdem noch der in Frankfurt nur all zu gut bekannte PETER EILMES [TRUST/EGOTON], der sympathische Berlinflüchtling SPACEINVASION [ABYSS] und das wandelnde Munitionslager CLOAK [VOID].
