Nekromantix are a psychobilly band that formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1989.
The Nekromantix were formed in 1989 in Copenhagen by Kim Nekroman after he left the Danish Navy, in which he had been a submarine radio operator. Deciding to launch a new career in music, he initially played drums in a rockabilly band prior to the foundation of Nekromantix. Learning to play the double bass and to sing, Nekroman set about forming a horror-themed psychobilly band with himself as the frontman. The band lineup is currently rounded out by Franc (guitar) and Lux (drums).
The band played two local shows in Copenhagen before appearing in a large psychobilly festival in Hamburg, Germany only six months after the band's formation. This lead to a record deal for their first album, Hellbound. Nekromantix began touring Europe heavily. At the time, the psychobilly scene was largely dominated by English bands. The band recorded a second album in 1991, Curse of the Coffin which resulted in some MTV play. 1994's Brought Back to Life became the only psychobilly album so far to ever be nominated for a Grammy award.
The band was signed to Hellcat Records in 2001, due to record label owner Tim Armstrong of punk rock band Rancid being a long-time fan of the band. Their fifth album and USA debut, Return of the Loving Dead, was recorded in Los Angeles and released in 2002. A sixth album, Dead Girls Don't Cry, was released for Hellcat in 2004, with Nekroman recording bass and vocals in Los Angeles while the Sandorff brothers recorded their respective parts back in Denmark.
In April 2005, the Sandorff brothers departed from the Nekromantix on good terms, citing their reason for leaving as "it wasn't funny anymore". They were replaced with guitarist Troy and drummer Wasted James, both from California-based psychobilly group Rezurex. Wasted James also plays in Tiger Army, and formerly played as the Nekromantix touring drummer. Andy Demize is now drummer for Nekromantix and features on the new 2007 album 'Life Is A Grave & I Dig It!'
Kim Nekroman is married to Patricia Day, ex-guitarist of Danish band Peanut Pump Gun. They play in rockabilly band called Horrorpops together.
Kim Nekroman's signature coffinbass has gone through many incarnations, the first of which being fashioned out of an actual child's coffin. The child's coffin, however, did not produce an excellent sound, so Nekroman built another himself with better acoustics. Over the years he has made a handfull of the instruments, the most recent update being collapsable for easier transportation.

Gründung
Nachdem er acht Jahre für die königliche dänische Marine in einem U-Boot zur See gefahren war, versuchte Sänger und Bassist Kim Nekroman (bürgerlich Dan Gaarde), als Schlagzeuger in einer Rockabilly-Band Fuß zu fassen, bevor er begann, sich für Psychobilly zu interessieren. Er kreierte seinen unverkennbaren sargförmigen Kontrabass („Coffinbass“) und rief die Nekromantix ins Leben. Zurzeit wird die Band durch Pete Belair (Gitarre) und Lux (Schlagzeug) komplettiert. Von 1989 bis 2005 wechselte die Besetzung von Gitarre und Schlagzeug mehrfach; vor der aktuellen Besetzung waren die Positionen mit den Brüdern Peter (Gitarre) und Kristian (Schlagzeug) Sandorff besetzt, von 2005 bis 2007 besetzte Troy Destroy die Gitarre und Wasted James von 2005 bis 2006 das Schlagzeug. Als Mitte Januar 2009 Andrew Martinez (Andy DeMize) bei einem Autounfall verstarb, musste eine neue Schlagzeugerin an Bord – Lux.
Aufstieg
Die Nekromantix spielten auf zwei kleineren Veranstaltungen in Kopenhagen, bevor sie nur ein halbes Jahr nach ihrer Gründung auf einem großen Psychobilly-Festival in Hamburg auftraten. Durch diesen Auftritt bekamen sie den Plattenvertrag für ihr erstes Album, „Hellbound“. Die Band tourte jetzt massiv durch ganz Europa. Zu dieser Zeit wurde die Psychobilly-Szene in erster Linie von britischen Bands dominiert. Im Jahr 1991 nahm die Band ihr zweites Album, „Curse Of The Coffin“, auf. Auskopplungen hieraus fanden Einzug in das Programm des Musiksenders MTV.
Weiterer Verlauf der Karriere
Das Nachfolgealbum „Brought Back to Life“ von 1994 war das erste Psychobilly-Album, das jemals für einen Grammy-Award nominiert wurde.
2001 wurde die Band von der Plattenfirma Hellcat Records unter Vertrag genommen, deren Besitzer, Tim Armstrong von der Punkrockband Rancid, bekennender Fan der Nekromantix ist. Ihr fünftes Album (und gleichzeitig ihr USA-Debüt), „Return of the Loving Dead“, wurde in Los Angeles aufgenommen und 2002 veröffentlicht.
Das sechste Album, „Dead Girls Don’t Cry“, wurde 2004 bei Hellcat Records veröffentlicht. Bassspur und Gesang hierfür waren von Nekroman in Los Angeles, Gitarre und Schlagzeug von den Sandorff-Brüdern in Dänemark aufgenommen worden.
Im April 2005 trennten sich die Sandorff-Brüder im Guten von den Nekromantix. Sie wurden durch Troy Destroy und Wasted James ersetzt, die beide von der kalifornischen Psychobilly-Band Rezurex kamen. Schlagzeuger Wasted James spielt auch bei der Tiger Army, und war schon früher als Drummer mit den Nekromantix auf Tour gewesen. 2006 wurde Wasted James durch Andrew Martinez (Künstlername „Andy DeMize“) von der kalifornischen Band The Rocketz ersetzt. Dieser starb am 11. Januar 2009 an den Folgen eines Autounfalls im kalifornischen Fullerton.
Im März 2007 wurde das Album „Life Is a Grave & I Dig It“ veröffentlicht.
Kim Nekroman ist mit Patricia Day, Ex-Gitarristin der dänischen Band Peanut Pump Gun, verheiratet. Zusammen spielen sie bei den Horrorpops.
