In 1978 he started as singer and guitar player in the punk band Slaughterhouse but left the group after one year to form the new band The Few. In 1980 he formed the electronic band Absolute Body Control, influenced by Suicide, DAF, and British artists like Fad Gadget. After going through various members, Absolute Body Control soon settled as a duo with Ivens and Eric van Wonterghem.
In 1985, Absolute Body Control joined forces with Marc Verhaeghen's band The Klinik and Sandy Nys' The Maniacs to form the "supergroup" Absolute Controlled Clinical Maniacs. The name was soon shortened to The Klinik; Nys left in 1986 and van Wonterghem in 1987 to work on their own bands, while Ivens remained a member until 1991, when he left to concentrate on his solo project Dive which had numerous releases the following 15 years.
Also in 1996, Dirk started Sonar together with Patrick Stevens, who left in 1998 to be replaced by long-time collaborator (and brother-in-law) Eric van Wonterghem. In 2003-2005 he rejoined Marc Verhaeghen in The Klinik for a few festival concerts, without releasing any new material.
Ivens has also guest starred as a vocalist on songs by Monolith, Suicide Commando, and Nebula H (among others), remixed other artists, and runs the record labels Body Records and Daft Records.

Dirk Ivens kam durch die Inspiration der Punk-Bewegung zur Musik. Er begann als Sänger und Gitarrist in der Punkband Slaughterhouse. Ein Jahr später verließ er die Band um das Projekt The Few zu gründen. Im Jahr 1978 entdeckte Ivens das New Yorker No-Wave-Duo Suicide. Das war für ihn der Schlüssel zu seinem Interesse an der elektronischen Musik.
Anfang 1980 gründete Dirk Ivens die Band Absolute Body Control. 1981 kam Eric van Wonterghem zu Absolute Body Control. Im Jahr 1985 schlossen sich Dirk Ivens und Eric van Wonterghem Marc Verhaeghen (Akhet, D-Sign, Noise Unit, Para, X10) an und bildeten die Absolute Controlled Clinical Maniacs. Der Name wurde nach einer Tour in Norwegen nach The Klinik oder einfacher Klinik geändert. Dirk Ivens war bis 1991 in The Klinik aktiv. Im Jahr 2003 kam The Klinik für eine Reunion-Show wieder zusammen. Seidem spielen Dirk Ivens, Marc Verhaegen und Peter Mastbooms regelmäßig live.
Im Jahr 1990 veröffentlichte Dirk Ivens unter dem Namen Dive ein selbstbetiteltes Soloalbum auf seinem eigenen Label Body Records. Das war der Start für weitere Projekte, teilweise in Zusammenarbeit mit Musikern und Bands wie Sigillum S, Controlled Bleeding, Kirlian Camera, Ivan Iusco (Nightmare Lodge), Rafael M. Espinosa, Diskonnekted und Françoise Duvivier. Im Jahr 1996 startete Ivens das Projekt Sonar.
Dirk Ivens gründete die Labels Daft Records mit dem Sublabel Faceless, im Jahr 2007 das Label Minimal Maximal und das Label Body Records, das ein Sublabel des belgischen Labels Antler-Subway ist. Dirk Ivens gründete auch das Seitenprojekt Blok 57. Blok 57 veröffentlichte 1992 das gleichnamige Album und 1995 das Album "Animals On Speed", beide über Zoth Ommog.
Mit Nora Below (Bastards Of Love, Sýn, Stop Disco Mafia) bildete er das Duo S/HE. Sie sind mit dem Titel "Who Do You Love?" auf der 2015 veröffentlichten Kompilation "Deep" vertreten.
Dirk Ivens Schwester Hilde Ivens ist mit Eric van Wonterghem verheiratet und ebenfalls im Musikbereich unter anderem als Sängerin und Texterin bei Monolith aktiv.
