Rotting Christ is a Greek extreme metal band formed in 1987. They are noted for being one of the first black metal bands within this region, as well as a premier act within the European underground metal scene. They are also responsible for creating the signature Greek black metal sound prevalent in the early 1990s.
Musical style
Early in their career, they were responsible for creating what is known as the "classic" Greek black metal sound which can be heard in other bands such as Varathron and Thou Art Lord. Despite the name, the band's traditional lyrical themes involving evil and occultism has evolved into a more "mystic" path, and they have modified their musical direction on each album, utilizing elements such as clean melodic baritone vocals, doom, gothic metal and industrial music traits, and male/female Benedictine chants. Recent albums, beginning with Khronos, have shown the band taking a more modern, faster and more aggressive approach to their blackened-gothic style. Their 2007 album, Theogonia, especially, has been described as more "atmospheric" and "epic" by their label.
The group's choice of producers, engineers and mixers has also been varied; Swedish extreme metal figures Dan Swanö (Unisound), Peter Tägtgren (Abyss Studios) and Fredrik Nordström (Studio Fredman), German producers Andy Classen (Asphyx, Belphegor), Siggi Bemm (Therion, Theatre of Tragedy) and Waldemar Sorychta (Lacuna Coil, The Gathering) as well as Xytras (Samael percussionist/keyboardist) have all contributed to production on the band's albums.

Die Band wurde 1987 in Athen gegründet und veröffentlichte bis 1989 zwei Demos, die noch stark am damals populären Grindcore orientiert waren. Erst mit dem 1989 erschienenen Demo „Satanas Tedeum“ wandte man sich, beeinflusst von unter anderem Venom, Celtic Frost und Bathory, dem Black Metal zu. Dieses Demo verschaffte der Band schlagartige Bekanntheit im Underground und genießt unter Freunden dieser Spielrichtung bis heute einen außerordentlich guten Ruf.
Nach weiteren Veröffentlichungen, unter anderem einer Split mit der italienischen Gothic-Metal-Band „Monumentum“, erschien schließlich 1993 über das französische Label „Osmose Productions“ das Debütalbum „Thy Mighty Contract“. Das Album gilt als wegweisend und machte die Band als erste griechische Black-Metal-Band auch weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt. Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des Albums absolvierte die Band mit den Norwegern „Immortal“ und den Kanadiern „Blasphemy“ die „Fuck-Christ“-Tournee, die als erste Black-Metal-Tournee überhaupt gilt. Im Folgejahr veröffentlichte die Band über das griechische Underground-Label „Unisound“ ihr zweites Album „Non Serviam“.
1995 unterschrieb die Band einen Vertrag mit dem Majorlabel „Century Media“ und veröffentlicht im Jahr darauf ihr drittes Album „Triarchy of the Lost Lovers“. Auf diesem Album gab die Band sich weitaus melodischer und verarbeitete erstmals Elemente des Gothic, und auch durch die saubere Produktion des Albums verabschiedete sich die Band weitgehend von ihren Black-Metal-Wurzeln.
