The band formed in Reading, Berkshire and primarily consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar), and Christian Savill (guitar). Several drummers played with the band, including Ian McCutcheon, Adrian Sell, and most notably Simon Scott who drummed on the first and second albums. Halstead was the band's primary songwriter.
Goswell and Halstead had known each other since early childhood in Reading, Berkshire. Scott left in 1994 and when Savill and Chaplin left the band after the release of Pygmalion, the remaining members renamed the band Mojave 3. The band reunited in 2014.
Influences and style
Music historian Simon Reynolds wrote that "Halstead was more influenced by Pink Floyd than by the Sex Pistols. Slowdive's formative pop experiences involve post-punk groups like the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose arty approach was closer to 70's progressive groups than punk's angry minimalism." Halstead stated that Slowdive wanted "to create something big and beautiful and sort of timeless".

Stil
Slowdive wurden stilistisch besonders durch Noise-Rock-Bands wie Sonic Youth und My Bloody Valentine, aber auch durch Gothic- und Dark-Wave-Gruppen wie Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure und den Cocteau Twins beeinflusst. Dabei spielten sie eine Musik, die von Kritikern als „wie in ein Loch fallend“ beschrieben wurde – vor allem benutzten sie Gitarren, um einen Soundteppich zu kreieren, vor dem das eigentliche Songwriting in den Hintergrund trat. Ab 1993 änderte sich ihr Stil zunehmend und es wurden vermehrt Ambient- und Electronica-Elemente in die Songs eingearbeitet.
Bandgeschichte
Laut Slowdives offizieller Webseite planen alle ursprünglichen Mitglieder Konzerte als Slowdive bei Primavera Sound in Barcelona sowie im Londoner Village Underground in 2014. Dies sind die ersten gemeinsamen Konzerte aller Mitglieder seit 21. Mai 1994. Proben fanden in Reading statt, neue Songs könnten eingespielt werden. Damit ist Slowdive offiziell wiedervereint.
