Darkwell was born early 1999, with the aim and motivation to create alive and profound Gothic Metal. All the bandmembers are experienced musicians. They know well how to inspire liveliness in their music, resulting in strong compositions and mature arrangements.
1999 DARKWELL signed a record-deal with the austrian label Napalm Records, and in march 2000 they started the recordings of their debut “Suspiria”. They coupled fragile and though powerful female vocals with pounding guitars and pushing baselines. Shortly after entering the studio the five went on tour with labal-colleagues Tristania and The Sins of Thy Beloved. This tour was crowned with success: They got booked for the Wave Gothic Meeting even before releasing their first record, followed by many shows and a tour with Graveworm and Vintersorg.

Darkwell bekamen bereits im Jahr ihrer Gründung einen Plattenvertrag bei Napalm Records. Im darauf folgenden Jahr waren sie mit Tristania und The Sins of Thy Beloved auf Tour.
Aufgrund ihres Erfolges wurden sie dann auch zum Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2003 eingeladen und gingen danach noch auf Tournee mit Graveworm und Vintersorg. Auf den ersten beiden Alben steuerte noch Alexandra Pittracher den Gesang bei, trennte sich dann aber von der Band aufgrund persönlicher und musikalischer Differenzen im Jahr 2003. Sie wurde durch Stephanie Meier ersetzt. 2004 waren Darkwell in neuer Besetzung mit Atrocity, Leaves Eyes und Battlelore auf Europatournee die auch einen Auftritt bei dem Metal Female Voices Fest umfasste. Videos der Band wurden bei Musiksendern (z. B. VIVA) gespielt.
Nach der um zwei Jahre verzögerten Veröffentlichung des Albums Metat[r]on ließen die Aktivitäten weiter nach. Das letzte Konzert fand 2007 statt, die Band wurde allerdings bislang nicht offiziell aufgelöst.
