Originally formed in Luton in early 1979, UK Decay were leaders of the then merging post-punk scene and are widely credited (or derided) with coining the term ‘Goth’ in a music press interview in Sounds music paper that subsequently inspired a movement. Part of a musical lineage that saw them emerge after Siouxsie & The Banshees and pre-fame Adam & The Ants alongside the likes of Bauhaus and Killing Joke, their single/EP releases and debut studio album For Madmen Only were substantial Independent Chart-topping records , while they were also session regulars on John Peel’s Radio 1 show. Extensive touring in the UK and mainland Europe led to tours of North America - including memorable treks supporting Dead Kennedys and then headlining above a new LA punk scene containing Circle Jerks, Black Flag, DOA , Social Unrest , The Subhumans, etc - while current iconic names such as Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor and Tool have all cited UK Decay’s music and incendiary live performances as influences on their own careers.
Following a brief 1993 reunion (in which three of their older tracks were rerecorded), UK Decay resumed activity in the early 2000s, launching a website and reissuing A Night for Celebration in 2005 in an expanded deluxe edition titled Nights for Celebration. 2007 saw the release of compilation Death, So Fatal, containing a mix of demos, single tracks, Peel sessions and the 1993 remakes.
In 2008, UK Decay reformed for a UK reunion gig and to headline the legendary Drop Dead Festival in Lisbon, Portugal, joined by new drummer Raymond "Raymundo" Phillpott. Footage from the concert appeared instantly on social media and reignited the band's dormant fanbase as well as the attention of listeners too young to have witnessed the band before. This renewed surge of interest led to further bookings, including a tour of Italy in April 2009, an August 2009 appearance at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool, and other headlining festival appearances across Europe.
For Madmen Only was reissued on both CD and digital media in 2009, with the Rising from the Dread EP and several single-only tracks appended. Beginning with their November 2012 headlining appearance at the Drop Dead Festival in Berlin, the band were augmented by second guitarist Jonny G (like Philpott, a former member of The Hangman's Beautiful Daughters).
The current quintet released the single "Killer"/"Heavy Metal Jews" in February 2013. Their second studio album, New Hope for the Dead, was produced by Chris Tsangarides, released in April 2013.

UK Decay entstand quasi aus der Asche der Band The Resistors, der Steven Abbot (Gitarre), Steve Harle (Drums), Paul Wilson (Vocals) und Martin Smith (Bass) angehörten.
Als Paul Wilson im Frühjahr 1979 die Band verließ, änderten die restlichen Mitglieder deren Namen in UK Decay und veröffentlichten in Zusammenarbeit mit der Band Pneumania die 7'' "The Split Single". Sie fand reißenden Absatz, was nicht zuletzt einem Review im Musikmagazin "New Musical Express" (NME) geschuldet war, in dem UK Decay als "one of the worst punk bands of all time" bezeichnet wurden.
Anfang 1980 wurde die "Black Cat" EP veröffentlicht, die es sogar in die UK Indie Charts schaffte, gefolgt von weiteren 7''-Platten und einem Album. In dieser Zeit spielten UK Decay außerdem ihren ersten Gig außerhalb ihrer Heimatstadt und standen hierfür mit keinen Geringeren als Bauhaus auf der Bühne. Ebenfalls 1980 wurde die Single "For My Country" released, die sich sagenhafte acht Monate in den Indie-Charts hielt und bis auf Platz 13 kletterte.
Eine ausgedehnte Tour durch Großbritannien, zusammen mit den Dead Kennedys, folgte sowie 1981 zwei weitere Singles: "Unexpected Guest" and "Sexual". Letztere erreichte sogar Platz 4 der Indie Charts und ebnete damit den Weg für das Debüt-Album "For Madmen Only". Zu dieser Zeit verließ auch Martin Smith die Band und wurde zwischenzeitlich durch Lorraine 'Lol' Turvey (The Statics) ersetzt, die später von Creetin K-Os abgelöst wurde. Schließlich übernahm Eddie 'Twiggy' Branch den Bass - gerade noch rechtzeitig, um "For Madmen Only" fertig zu stellen.
1982, nachdem das Plattenlabel von UK Decay pleite gegangen war, wurde die Band von dem Management 'aufgesammelt', das später zu dem heute legendären Label Jungle Records werden sollte. Doch trotz des großen Erfolges der Band und einer stetig wachsenden Fangemeinde lösten sich UK Decay im Dezember 1982 auf. Posthum erschien das Live-Album "A Night For Celebration" (1983).
Trotz ihres relativ kurzen Bestehens waren UK Decay wohl einer der musikalischen Haupteinflüsse für Giganten wie die Sisters Of Mercy, Sex Gang Children oder Southern Death Cult. Diese trugen den aufstrebenden Postpunk und Goth weiter, dessen Nachhall auch heute noch lange nicht abgeklungen ist. UK Decay spielten unbestritten eine der Hauptrollen in der Entwicklung dieser Szene.
Endlich, im Jahr 2008, fand sich die Band wieder zusammen, um ihren Reunion-Gig in Großbritannien zu geben und anschließend das legendäre Drop Dead Festival in Lissabon/Portugal zu headlinen, was zahlreiche Booking-Anfragen und entsprechend viele Auftritte nach sich zog. Außerdem wurde das Album "For Madmen Only", die "Rising From The Dead" 12'' und weitere Singles als CDs und zum Download re-released.
