IKON is an Australian goth/darkwave band that has gained an international following. Chris McCarter(vocals, guitar, programming) and Dino Molinaro (bass) began to create music as high school students in Melbourne, Australia in 1988. In 1991, their band Death in the Dark, which included Michael Carrodus on vocals, changed its name to Ikon.
Ikon has released five studio albums, five EPs and seventeen singles, with additional unique versions that have been produced for Germany, America and Russia. The band’s last full-length release, Destroying the World to Save it, attained number 21 on the Native DJ World Charts for best album of 2005.
IKON has frequently toured Australia, Europe and the UK. Ikon has played on the same bill as The Sisters of Mercy, H.I.M., Soft Cell, Death in June, London After Midnight and The Mission. Ikon has performed at the Eurorock Festival (2001) in Belgium and at the M’era Luna Festival (2002) in Hildesheim, Germany before an audience of more than 15,000 people. The band has also appeared three times at the world’s largest goth festival, Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, Germany, in 2003, 2005 (during that year Anthony Cornish joined the live line-up on guitar) and 2011.
In 2007, the band embarked upon ‘The Burden of History’ tour of Europe to mark the release of the singles collection (1992-2007) of the same name. The EPs League of Nations (2007) and Amongst the Runes (2008) demonstrate a progression in IKON’s signature sound, providing a taster of the forthcoming album Love, Hate and Sorrow (to be released in September 2009). While retaining the essence of influences such as Joy Division, early New Order and Death in June, the future for IKON promises to add further texture to the band’s style. Love, Hate and Sorrow embraces more melodic song structures without entirely relinquishing the shadowy threads that are interweaved in the lyrics, art work, and music of one of the world’s most successful and enduring darkwave bands. The single "A Line on a Dark Day" from the album will also be made into the band's first video clip.

Ebenso wie andere musikalische Duos, begannen Chris McCarter (Vocals, Guitar) und Dino Molinaro (Bass) als Highschool-Schüler im Jahre 1988 Musik zu kreieren - bis heute - denn sie nehmen weiterhin gemeinsam Alben auf und performen diese dann weltweit live. Im Jahr 1991 wurde der ursprünglich gewählte Name "Death in the Dark" durch den Namen IKON ersetzt. Seit rund siebzehn Jahre hat sich die Band eine unverkennbare Mischung aus Post-Punk und Rock, sowie Elementen des Darkwave zu Eigen gemacht, die ein internationales Publikum anspricht.
IKON veröffentlichte bislang 5 Studioalben, vier EPs und siebzehn Singles, mit zusätzlich einzigartigen Versionen, die speziell für Deutschland, Amerika und Russland produziert wurden. Das Album "Destroying The World To Save It" erreichte in 2005 mühelos Platz 21 der World-DJ-Native-Charts um das Beste Album 2005. Außerdem erschienen IKONs Songs auf dutzenden von Compilations. Weiterhin steuerten IKON diverse Cover Songs zu ausgewählten Alben, die zu Ehren von Joy Division, The Cure und Kraftwerk aufgenommen wurden, bei.
Aufgrund der Stärke des versierten, sich stets weiterentwickelnden Song-Repertoires haben IKON mittlerweile etliche Konzerte nicht nur in Australien, sondern auch in Deutschland, Belgien, England, Italien, Dänemark, Holland und in der Schweiz neben Bands wie "Sisters of Mercy", "H.I.M.", "London After Midnight", "Soft Cell", "Death in June", "The Crüxshadows" oder "The Mission" gespielt. IKON spielten bereits auf dem Eurorock Festival (2001) in Belgien aber auch auf dem M'era Luna Festival (2002) in Hildesheim, wo sie vor über 15.000 Fans auftraten. Bisher traten IKON zweimal auf dem legendären und zweitgrößten Goth Festival auf - in den Jahren 2003 und 2005 begeisterten Ikon auf dem "Wave Gotik Treffen" in Leipzig. In 2005 wurden IKON hierbei schon von ihrem neuen Bandmitglied Anthony Cornish (Guitar) unterstützt.
2007 wurde ein Kapitel von IKONs musikalischer Hinterlassenschaft geschlossen, indem die Band auf dem Album "The Burden Of History" ihre Single-Collection aus den Jahren 1992-2007 aufarbeitete und diese auf der gleichnamigen Europatournee präsentierte. Ebenfalls erschien in 2007 das Album "As Time Goes By", welches erste Studioschritte aus der Gründungszeit IKONs und Live-Songs aus der gleichen Zeit aus den Archiven direkt zu den Fans nach Hause brachte.
Die EP "League of Nations" (2007) ist Beweis der Entwicklung von IKONs ursprünglichem Sound und ist ein spannender Vorgeschmack auf das nächste Album "Love, Hate and Sorrow" (Veröffentlichung Sommer 2008). Obwohl eine Essenz von Einflüssen durch Joy Division, New Order und Death in June beibehalten wird, verspricht die musikalische Zukunft von IKON einen noch stärken, ganz eigenen Stil, der durch neue Strukturen geschaffen wird. "Love, Hate and Sorrow" umfasst melodiösere Song-Strukturen, ohne aber die schattigen Gedanken, mit denen IKONs Lyrik, Artwork und Musik verwoben sind, loszulassen. Man darf gespannt sein und sich freuen auf das, was und eine der weltweit erfolgreichsten und beständigsten Darkwave Bands in Zukunft präsentieren wird.
