Front Line Assembly are Bill Leeb (vocals, synthesizers) and Rhys Fulber (synthesizers and samplers), one of many groups formed by the prolific Vancouver, Canada-based duo. After working in the mid-'80s under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder with Skinny Puppy, the Austrian-born Leeb formed the industrial/ebm-based Front Line Assembly in 1986 with Fulber – who initially joined on as a studio assistant – and synth player Michael Balch. After a handful of compilation appearances and cassette-only releases, Front Line Assembly issued its first three full-length efforts – The Initial Command, State of Mind, and Corrosion – on a monthly basis between December 1987 and February 1988. Later in 1988, Corrosion was reissued, along with a subsequent mini-album titled Disorder and a number of exclusive bonus tracks, as Convergence.
In 1989, the group returned with the album Gashed Senses & Crossfire, which contained the dance-flavored singles "Digital Tension Dementia" and "No Limit." A European tour in support of the record yielded a live album – titled simply, Live – that was released and deleted on the same day in a limited edition of 4,000 pressings. After Balch departed Front Line Assembly in 1990, Fulber stepped in as a full partner; the streamlined duo soon released the electro-styled album Caustic Grip, while 1992's Tactical Neural Implant found the group's music moving in a more hard-edged disco direction. By 1994, the sound evolved yet again, with the album Millennium displaying a newfound reliance on guitars; both the title track and "This Faith" scored as club hits. Fulber departed the lineup by 1997, while his replacement Chris Peterson debuted with 1998's Flavour of the Weak. A best-of/remix compilation, Monument, was released the same year, as well as Re-Wind, a re-mix collection of material from Flavour of the Weak. Implode appeared one year later. Sticking with a heavy dose of synth-pop trance and throbbing melodies,Leeb and Peterson issued Epitaph in fall 2001.
Once again re-united as FLA, Bill And Rhys released a killer single 'Maniacal' (2003) as a precursor to the new album 'Civilization' (2004) and the sighs of relief amongst FLA fans were audible across the globe. 'Maniacal' is good old-fashioned FLA bought up to date whilst B-side 'Anti' shows that messers Leeb and Fulber can still produce stark and dark Industrial.
For the first time, Bill Leeb, Rhys Fulber, and Chris Peterson have joined ranks. The trio, with new members Jeremy Inkel and Adrian White, began work on Artificial Soldier in early 2005, and it was time well spent. Just release in June 2006 the newly re-formed line-up managed to create a release that should live up to the expectations of Front Line Assembly fans. Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths and Bill Leeb's trademark vocals are the norm here. Two guest vocalists also appear on Artificial Soldier. Eskil Simonsson from Covenant (on “The Storm”) and Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242 (on “Future Fail”).
Other projects include: Conjure One, Delerium, Pro-Tech, Synaesthesia, Will, Intermix, Noise Unit, Equinox, Cyberaktif and Mutual Mortuary.

Front Line Assembly (gelegentlich auch Frontline Assembly geschrieben) ist ein kanadisches Musikprojekt aus Vancouver und wurde 1984 von Bill Leeb gegründet.
Bandgeschichte
Der Ursprung
Die Geschichte von Front Line Assembly begann, als Bill Leeb entschied, bei Skinny Puppy, den kanadischen Industrialpionieren - unter angeblich umstrittenen Umständen - auszusteigen. Der Name soll von den belgischen EBM-Pionieren Front 242 inspiriert worden sein.
Die Anfänge
Inspiriert von der Musik von DAF, Portion Control, SPK und Liaisons Dangereuses, rief Bill Leeb das Projekt Front Line Assembly ins Leben. Nach zwei selbst vertriebenen Demokassetten (Total Terror und Nerve War - beide 1986), erschien 1987 das erste Album The Initial Command. Michael Balch kam damit zur Band. An einigen Stücken war auch Rhys Fulber beteiligt.
Bereits 1988 erschien das Folgealbum State of Mind. Mit den beiden Mini-Alben Corrosion und Disorder begann auch die lange Zusammenarbeit mit Wax Trax! und Third Mind Records. Diese beiden Mini-Alben wurden noch im selben Jahr zusammengepackt als ein Album (Convergence) veröffentlicht, und später noch einmal mit Extratracks als Corroded Disorder (1995).
Der Durchbruch
Mit ihrem nächsten Album Gashed Senses & Crossfire (1989) wurden FLA härter - und erfolgreicher. Danach stieg Michael aus und Rhys wurde Vollmitglied.
Während Caustic Grip (1990) sich noch stark an seinen Vorgänger hielt, kam 1992 mit Tactical Neural Implant ein Album, welches bis heute als ein Meisterwerk nicht nur für FLA, sondern der elektronischen Musik allgemein gilt.
Dann kam der Wechsel zu Roadrunner Records und mit Millennium (1994) die Rockmusik. Harte Gitarren von Devin Townsend und Don Harrison dominieren den Sound. Auf dem Folgealbum Hard Wired (1995 bei Off Beat und wie die folgenden Alben in den USA von Metropolis Records vermarktet) verbanden Bill und Rhys die Gitarren von Millennium mit der Atmosphäre von Tactical Neural Implant. Nach der Welttournee stieg 1996 Rhys aus und Chris Peterson stieß zu FLA.
Die Wende
Mit Chris kam ein komplett neuer Sound. Weg waren die Gitarren, her mit Drum'n'Bass. FLAvour of the Weak (1997) ist trotz allem kein schlechtes Album, auch wenn es gern so von vielen Fans hingestellt wird.
Danach kam Implode (1999), welches an Qualität und Geschlossenheit in jeder Hinsicht mit dem bisherigen Meisterstück Tactical Neural Implant mithalten kann. Doch mit Epitaph (2001) kam schließlich das Aus. Nach einer katastrophalen Tournee schien das Ende gekommen zu sein, was allerdings weniger an mangelnden Verkäufen lag, sondern an Differenzen innerhalb der Band.
Phönix?
Von vielen schließlich für tot erklärt, kam schließlich die überraschende Wende und 2003 erschien die Single Maniacal mit dem alten und neuen Partner Rhys Fulber, 2004 schließlich gar ein neues Album Civilization. Wieder heißt es, Civilization sei das letzte FLA Album.
Dass auch Civilization nicht das letzte Album der Gruppe sein sollte bestätigte sich im Juni 2006 mit dem Album Artificial Soldier, nun verstärkt durch die zurückgekehrten Chris Peterson und Michael Balch sowie Jeremy Inkel, Adrian White und Jason Filipchuk, das nochmal bestätigte, dass Front Line Assembly noch nicht am Ende ist.
