(lastfm) Patrick Wolf (born Patrick Denis Apps on 30 June, 1983) is a singer-songwriter from London, United Kingdom. Wolf mixes electronics and samples with a wide range of instruments including viola, keyboards, ukulele, and percussion, all of which he plays himself to form a fusion of jazz, folk and electronic music.
He began experimenting with sound and four-track recording at the age of 11, eventually building an arsenal of instruments that included junk-shop organs and a home-built theremin. At the age of 14 he joined the pop-art collective Minty, a venture that caught the eyes and ears of Fat Cat Records, which went on to supply the youth with a computer and mixing tools for aid in his newfound audio experimentation. He left home at the age of 16 and formed Maison Crimineaux with his friend Fanny, which eventually found its way to France where the noisy duo played a show attended by electronic maestro Kristian Robinson (aka Capitol K), who went on to release Wolfs lauded 2003 debut. With Lycanthropy reaching number 39 in the NMEs top LPs of the year, as well as receiving critical acclaim throughout Europe and America, Wolf decided to study composition at the Trinity College Music Conservatoire.
The results of that endeavor can be heard on his 2005 release Wind in the Wires, a dark collection of moody British folk and chamber pop with a chilly laptop sheen.
Wolf released his third album, and the first on a major label, The Magic Position, in February 2007. He has been busy promoting it with a successful concert tour in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia.
Wolfs fifth album, Lupercalia, is due to be released on 20 June 2011 by Hideout, a subsidiary of Mercury Records. Songfacts explains that the album title refers to the Lupercalia festival, which is was an ancient fertility and love festival that the ancient Romans celebrated between February 13-15, and was the predecessor to Valentines Day.

Als Kind lernte Patrick Wolf Klavier, Violine, Viola und Flöte, in späteren Jahren weitere Instrumente, darunter Keltische Harfe, Ukulele, Akkordeon und Theremin zu spielen. Im Alter von elf Jahren begann er eigene Songs zu schreiben. Mit 15 Jahren verließ er seine Schule in London, in der er Opfer von Mobbing gewesen war, um das private Internat Bedales School zu besuchen. Er verließ das Internat bereits ein Jahr später und zog in ein leerstehendes Haus im Londoner Vorort Richmond, wo er weiter komponierte und in verschiedenen Bands spielte.
Patrick Wolf veröffentlichte 2003 bei dem britischen Label Fat Cat Records sein erstes Album Lycanthropy, das ein Jahr später auf dem Label Tomlab auch in Europa und Amerika erschien und positive Kritiken erhielt. In dem eher düsteren Album, das eine Verwandlung vom Jungen zum Wolf beschreibt, spielt Patrick Wolf neben dem Gesang auch diverse Instrumente.
Patrick Wolf darf durchaus als Epigone der Sängerin Björk gesehen werden, die sich ebenfalls über ihre Musik hinaus als popmusikalisches Gesamtkunstwerk inszeniert; beide sind etwa für ihre aufwändigen und provokanten Bühnenkostüme bekannt. So wie Björk häufig mit ihrer isländischen Herkunft kokettiert, stilisiert sich der Halbire Patrick Wolf gerne als Erbe der inselkeltischen Liedkunst, wie vor allem auf seinem zweiten Album Wind in the Wires deutlich zu erkennen ist. Auch die Verbindung von akustischen Elementen mit elektronischer Musik ist beiden gemein, die auf visueller Ebene der Kombination von Natur- mit Industrie- und Großstadtmotiven entspricht. Den popkulturellen Wappentieren Björks, dem Bären und dem Schwan, setzt Patrick Wolf als Totems den Wolf und diverse Raubvögel entgegen; beide spielen auch mit ihrer Eigenverwandlung in ebensolche Tiere (etwa Björk in ihrem Musikvideo zu Hunter, oder Patrick auf seinem Debütalbum Lycanthropy).
