Skeletal Family are an English New Wave band formed in Keighley, West Yorkshire, in December 1982. The band was formed from the remaining members of an earlier group called the Elements, and took their name from the title of the song "Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family" from the 1974 David Bowie album, Diamond Dogs.
History
The original line-up of the band was Anne-Marie Hurst (vocals), Stan Greenwood (guitar), Roger "Trotwood" Nowell (bass guitar), Ian "Karl Heinz" Taylor (keyboard/saxophone) and Steve Crane (drums). In 1983, after their first single, "Trees", the band signed to independent record label Red Rhino Records. They recorded their first single for Red Rhino, "The Night", shortly after losing their original drummer Crane, who was replaced by Howard Daniels. Daniels soon left, joining My Pierrot Dolls, and was replaced by Martin Henderson (formerly of The Last Laugh). Skeletal Family's first album, Burning Oil, recorded in four days at a cost of £640, was released by Red Rhino in August 1984. It topped the UK Independent Chart, staying in the top 10 until the end of the year. The band began touring with the Sisters of Mercy during the Sisters' First and Last and Always tour. Skeletal Family released the Futile Combat album in 1985, along with the "Promised Land" single.
The group then signed with Chrysalis Records and released two 1986 singles, "Restless" and "Just a Minute". Hurst and Henderson left the band to develop new projects. Hurst eventually teamed up with Gary Marx in Ghost Dance. Henderson joined former March Violets vocalist Simon Denbigh to create the Batfish Boys. Former Colourfield backing vocalist Katrina Phillips replaced Hurst, while Kevin Hunter replaced Henderson. John Clarke joined as a second guitarist. The group disbanded later in 1986 after being dropped by Chrysalis. Trotwood and Hunter formed a new band, Say You.
In 2002, Skeletal Family reformed with a line-up of Greenwood, Nowell, Henderson and Hurst. The latter had to drop out due to family commitments, replaced briefly by Phillips, and then by new vocalist Claire Bannister. They played several high profile shows, including Wave-Gotik-Treffen three times as well as the Drop Dead Festival in New York City. This line-up released an album, Sakura, in May 2005 on Gepek Records.
Skeletal Family's next album, Songs of Love, Hope and Despair, featuring new bassist Johnny Lorrimer, was released by Gepek in September 2009. Two months later the group announced that it had disbanded again.
In 2012, Hurst, Nowell and Greenwood reformed Skeletal Family with Owen Richards on guitar and Adrian Osadzenko on drums.

Die Skeletal Family entstand 1982 aus den Überresten der Band The Elements und gehört auch heute noch zu den bekanntesten britischen Bands im Gothrock-Genre. Ihre Musik ist bis ins neue Jahrtausend durch Einflüsse der Wave- und Gothrock-Szene der 80er Jahre und der Punkszene der späten 70er geprägt. Die Band benannte sich nach dem Titel eines David Bowie Songs von dessen "Diamond Dogs" Album.
Nach der ersten selbstproduzierten Single "Trees"/"Just A Friend" wurde John Peel auf Skeletal Family aufmerksam und spielte sie in seiner Radioshow. Dies ersparte der Band das übliche Tingeln durch kleine, leere Clubs und man konnte sofort vor einem größerem Publikum im "Fulham Greyhound" in London auftreten. Die britische Musikpresse erkannte das Potential der Band und sie wurden als Support, u.a. für die Sex Gang Children, gebucht. Nach der weniger erfolgreichen Single "The Night"/"Waiting Here" schaffte man es mit ihrem Nachfolger "She Cries Alone" in den Britischen Independent Charts.
Endlich wurde das Debüt-Album "Burning Oil" aufgenommen und nach einer persönlichen Anfrage von Andrew Eldritch ging man anschließend mit den Sister Of Mercy auf deren "Autumn - Black October" Tour.
1985 folgte das zweite Album "Futile Land", mit dem wohl bekanntesten Lied der Band "Promised Land". Die Singleauskopplung des Tracks schaffte es bis auf Platz 3 der Indie-Charts. Höhepunkt des Jahres wurde ein Live-Auftritt mit Siouxsie & The Banshees in der Brixton Academy.
Von diesem Zeitpunkt wendete sich das Blatt. Sängerin Anne-Marie verließ die Band, kehrte aber kurz darauf wieder zurück, da eine landesweite Tour bereits gebucht war. Die Tour wurde ein Erfolg, doch Anne-Marie entschloss sich endgültig dazu, Skeletal Family hinter sich zu lassen und mit dem Sisters Of Mercy Mitbegründer Gary Marx die Band Ghost Dance zu gründen. Auftritte wurden abgesagt, neue Bandmitglieder gesucht und endlich fand man in Katrina Phillips auch eine neue Sängerin. Die Single "Restless" wurde aufgenommen, aber vor der Veröffentlichung wechselte man zu einem Majorlabel, was dazu führte, dass die Single nach dem letzten Mischen musikalisch nichts mehr mit Skeletal Family quasi zu tun hatte.
Trotzdem wurde sie veröffentlicht und brachte der Band, neben Radiointerviews, auch eine Doppelseite im Musikmagazin "Melody Maker" ein. Mit der zweiten Major-Single kehrte man endlich zum originalen Skeletal Family Sound zurück und "Just A Minute" wurde die kommerziell erfolgreichste Veröffentlichung.
Nach einer Tour durch Deutschland und einen Tag vor der Austrahlung ihres ersten Fernsehauftritts löste sich die Skeletal Family auf.
Doch 2002 kehrten sie zurück. Seitdem touren sie wieder durch Europa und veröffentlichten 2005 endlich ihr drittes Album "Sakura".
