Since their formation in 1994,[citation needed] the group have had two name changes, being previously known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal. Inspired by the combination of gothic imagery and music, the members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of prominent guitar lines and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic, detached sound. Much of the band's recent material, however, sees a heavier and more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs. The band's 2012 release, Dark Adrenaline, peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200. As of March 2012, Lacuna Coil has sold over 2 million records.

Sie gehört zu den erfolgreichsten italienischen Metalbands und steht zurzeit bei der deutschen Plattenfirma Century Media unter Vertrag. Die Diskographie der Band umfasst sechs Studioalben, eine DVD und zwei Kompilationen. Ihr drittes Album Comalies ist das weltweit meistverkaufte Album der Firmengeschichte. Der Bandname setzt sich aus dem italienischen Wort lacuna (dt. leer) und dem englischen Wort coil (dt. Spirale) zusammen.
Die Grundlage ihrer Musik bilden Metal-Klänge, begleitet von melodischen Gitarrenläufen mit leichten Einflüssen von Popmusik und (seit dem Album Karmacode) Nu Metal. Eine Besonderheit der Band ist der zweifache Gesang, einmal von Cristina Scabbia und als Gegenpart die männliche Stimme von Andrea Ferro. Während bei den meisten Bands des Genres eine Sopranstimme auf gutturalen Gesang trifft, singt Cristina Scabbia in der tiefen Frauenstimme Alt.
Haupteinflüsse der Band sind unter anderem Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Type O Negative, aber auch genrefremde Bands wie Depeche Mode. Ihre Coverversion von Enjoy the Silence wurde 2006 als Single veröffentlicht.
