Miranda Sex Garden are an English music group from London. They were originally active from 1990 to 2000, reforming in 2022.
Biography
Formed in 1990, Katharine Blake, Kelly McCusker and Jocelyn West were originally a trio of madrigal singers. They were educated at The Purcell School for Young Musicians in Bushey. The band's name comes from the novel The Ticket That Exploded by William S. Burroughs.
They were discovered by Barry Adamson when they were singing madrigals on Portobello Road in London. He invited them to sing on his Delusion soundtrack, with the song Il Solitario.[7] After that Daniel Miller invited them to sign a contract with Mute Records. They recorded their first single Gush Forth My Tears in March 1991. It was a madrigal with a beat, mixed by Danny Rampling. Their first album, Madra (August 1991), was produced by classical producer Tony Faulkner. It was entirely a cappella, with the songs all based on traditional English verse. It took only two days to record.
By 1992, Jocelyn West had left the band and was replaced by Donna McKevitt (vocals and viola). More new band members were Ben Golomstock who played guitars and Trevor Sharpe who played drums. On their second release, Iris (1992), the sound evolved into a blend of their madrigal-styled vocal harmonies with sounds reminiscent of folk music, gothic rock, dark wave, ethereal wave, and industrial music. The third album Suspiria came out in March 1993. Kelly McCusker left the band in late 1993 to start a career in classical music. She was replaced by Hepzibah Sessa.
Their sound became increasingly dark and sophisticated over the years. The fourth album, Fairytales of Slavery, was produced by Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten. In 1995 the group disbanded. Katharine Blake formed a new group with Dorothy Carter in 1996, Mediæval Bæbes. Sharpe later drummed for Minty, Plastic Fantastic and The Servant.
In 1999 they re-formed with some new members and released their final album Carnival of Souls in April 2000.
The band re-formed in 2022 and played their first reunion show on July 28 at London's 100 Club.

Der britische Musiker und Produzent Barry Adamson wurde auf die drei Musikstudentinnen Katharine Blake, Kelly McCusker und Jocelyn West aufmerksam, als sie auf Londons Straßen musizierten, und stellte sie daraufhin dem Musiklabel Mute Records vor. Unter Vertrag genommen, wurde 1991 das Debütalbum Madra veröffentlicht. Es enthält ausschließlich a cappella inszenierte Madrigale und unterscheidet sich darin deutlich vom weiteren musikalischen Weg der Band. Das Stück Gush Forth My Tears wurde wenig später remixt und als Singleauskopplung mit synthetischen Beats unterlegt veröffentlicht. Es entwickelte sich zu einem kleinen Clubhit.
Bereits auf der zweiten Veröffentlichung Iris gingen Miranda Sex Garden nun mit einer Mischung aus Dark Wave und Ethereal völlig andere, musikalische Wege, wurde die Band zuvor durch Trevor Sharpe, Ben Golomstock und Donna McKevitt um Gitarre, Schlagzeug, sowie eine weitere Sängerin erweitert.
Zur Promotion des 1993 erschienenen Albums Suspiria, welches den Stil von Iris konsequent weiterentwickelte, gingen Miranda Sex Garden im Vorprogramm von Spiritualized erstmals auf Tournee.
1994 wurde mit Unterstützung von FM Einheit und Alexander Hacke von der Musikgruppe Einstürzende Neubauten das nächste Album Fairytales of Slavery aufgenommen und veröffentlicht. Stilistisch wurde der Sound des Vorgängeralbums mit Elementen aus Industrial und Noise Pop weiterentwickelt. Hepzibah Sessa war zu dieser Zeit vorübergehend Mitglied bei Miranda Sex Garden. Bei einem Gig im Vorprogramm von Depeche Mode kam es in Nürnberg zu einem Eklat, als die Band gnadenlos ausgebuht wurde und Fans Gegenstände auf die Bühne warfen.
In der darauffolgenden Zeit beendeten Miranda Sex Garden und Mute Records ihre Zusammenarbeit und Kelly McCusker verließ die Band. Katharina Blake widmete sich zwischenzeitlich anderen Projekten und gründete 1996 die Formation Mediæval Bæbes.
Nach langer Pause und bei einem neuen Label unter Vertrag wurde im Jahr 2000 das letzte Album Carnival of Souls veröffentlicht, das nach dem gleichnamigen Horrorfilm aus dem Jahr 1962 (auf deutsch: Tanz der toten Seelen) benannt ist. Mit Teresa Casella, Mike Servent und Barney Hollington war Miranda Sex Garden mittlerweile zu einem Sextett herangewachsen.
