BIOGRAPHY 1986-2020 (THE SHORT STORY)
Funhouse is a Swedish rock band that was formed by four punk rockers with long hair in 1986. After releasing a self-financed single, "Tormentor", and with gigs all over Sweden, the band was soon signed to Accelerating Blue Fish, a local independent record label, who released the single "Sunset". But plans to release an album on this label were never realized as they were approached by the M&A Music Art label, whose dark wave profile was on par with the band's own style.
After the release of the “Friends" EP and "Girls" album, it took the band three years before they released new material but with the release of the magnificent epos of love, trust and betrayal album "Never Again" in 1996 Funhouse became one of the leading bands in the genre of dark rock in Europe. After endless trips across Europe in an orgy of cherry wine, gin, gigs, interviews etc. to promote the album and the music they call "goth n roll", the band went into the studio to record a new album, but the studio session turned into a nightmare. It was obvious that the price of the long “goth n roll” lifestyle had finally caught up with the band.
A long break turned out to be the only cure to avoid a split. Minor changes in the line-up and another studio session led to the release in 1998 of a limited-edition EP, “Second Coming”. After this release, the band signed with German label, Appollyon, and in 2000, they released “Forever True”, which only contained remastered versions of some of the band’s previously released tracks. This led to rumours that Funhouse had split up but to the surprise of the fans “Oceans of Tears” was released in 2001 and this was the first step to enter the American goth underground scene but still no new songs since the CD turned out to be another best of CD aimed at the US market. The fans would have to wait another three years before new material would finally be released.
In 2002, fans could read about new line-up changes and promises of a new album on the Funhouse website. And in 2003, the band finally delivered. With the album “Flames of Love” Funhouse proved that they still mastered the sound of dark up-tempo love songs with powerful chorus even though the new sound was much darker, with more guitars and keyboard than in previous releases.
In 2019, the band wrote on Facebook that they were planning a “Forever True 2020” tour, starting in Berlin on March 21, 2020. As a teaser, the band is planning the release of a new single called “Dark & Stormy” around Christmas 2019.
Expect some true goth n roll tunes and prepare your dance moves, cause these gothsters are going to put some joy into the darkness, because “If God was a rockstar, He would be Funhouse”.

Kalmar ist ein Küstenstädtchen im südlichen Schweden, und wenn man dort nicht gerade tot über'm Gartenzaun hängt, ist die Umgebung eher betrüblich. Das denken sich 1988 auch vier Langhaarige, die eine Vorliebe für Punk-Rock teilen und zusammen Musik machen, weshalb ein Umzug in eine größere Stadt unumgänglich erscheint. Ihre Wahl fällt schließlich auf Malmö, da diese Stadt nicht nur eine Schiffsfahrt von Koppenhagen entfernt, sondern auch sehr nah am restlichen europäischem Kontinent liegt. Mit ihrer zwei Jahre zuvor gegründeten Band Funhouse können sie schnell einen Deal bei Accelerating Blue Fish an Land ziehen, die ihre erste Single "Sunset" veröffentlichen.
Ihr Debütalbum "Girls", welches schon einen deutlichen Gothik und Dark Wave Einschlag aufweist, erscheint 1993 über M&A Music Art Label, doch zuvor kommt noch die EP "Friends" auf den Markt. Schon mit ihrem zweiten Album "Never Again" können sie sich fest in der Szene etablieren und touren auch schon quer durch Europa. Dort zelebrieren sie den Mythos von Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll par excellence und wollen eigentlich direkt im Anschluss wieder ins Studio um den Nachfolger einzuspielen. Doch die Studioarbeit erweist sich als wahrer Alptraum, und Funhouse sehen keine andere Möglichkeit einen Split zu vermeiden, als sich erst mal auf unbestimmte Zeit aus dem Weg zu gehen.
Ein weiterer Besetzungswechsel ist die Folge und 1998 kommt schließlich das nächste Lebenszeichen in Form von "The Second Coming". Auf längere Touren wartet man jedoch vergebens, Gerüchte über Probleme innerhalb der Band gehören zur Tagesordnung. Ein Vertrag mit dem deutschen Appollyon Label kommt zustande, und zur Jahrtausendwende erscheint tatsächlich ein Album namens "Forever True", jedoch handelt es sich dabei nur um ein Best Of Album. "Oceans Of Tears" bringt endlich auch den Einstieg in den amerikanischen Markt. Der Goth-Underground ist von der Scheibe begeistert, wenngleich auch auf diesem Album kein einziger neuer Song zu finden ist und es auch nur in den Staaten erscheint.
2002 kann man auf der Homepage endlich wieder etwas von Studioaktivitäten, jedoch auch von Line-Up Wechseln lesen. Bis Ende September, wo Funhouse auf dem Herbstnächste Festival auftreten, hört und sieht man aber weiterhin nichts von der Band, auch wenn sie dort schon einige neue Songs vorstellen. Einen Monat später folgt ein weiteres Konzert in Malmö, danach ist jedoch erst mal wieder Schluss, denn das Album "Flames Of Love" will fertig gestellt werden.
Diese erscheint Ende Januar 2004 und zeigt, dass die Band immer noch zu den Besten in ihrem Fach gehört, auch wenn sie vielleicht mal weniger einen auf Rockstar machen sollten. Die derzeitige Besetzung liest sich übrigens wie folgt: Mikael Körner (voc,g), Måns Tomsby (b), Peter Mårdklint (g), Dennis Berggren (keys) und Jonas Elmqvist (dr).
