Gunther Rost, former student of Maria-Claire Alain, has been awarded numerous international prizes, such as the Leipzig Bach Competition or the Dallas International Organ Competition. He gave his first public performance of the complete organ works by Bach in his school days.
At the age of 27 he received an appointment as Professor of Organ at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria, where he is now head of organ studies. He founded a university research center for the development of the instrument, playing and recording techniques of the modern organ, focussing on the digital organ,
Mr. Rost has been a guest professor to the Royal Academy of Music London, the Warsaw Chopin Academy, the Rimskij Korsakov Conservatory St. Petersburg and the Moscow Tchaikowski Conservatory. He is a frequent guest to venues and festivals such as the Rheingau Music Festival, the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Konzerthaus Berlin or the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall.
Among his highly reclaimed CD releases, there are the first authorized compete edition of Petr Eben’s organ works and his own organ adaptations of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Chopin’s 24 Preludes op. 28.
From 2012 to 2014, Gunther Rost was organist in residence with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Concert Hall. Amongst others, he has worked with the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian State Radio Choir, the Leipzig String Quartet or Elīna Garanča.

Gunther Rost wurde 2002 zum Universitätsprofessor für Orgel an die Kunstuniversität Graz berufen. Dort leitet er das Institut für Kirchenmusik und Orgel und gründete auch das Zentrum für Orgelforschung, das sich u. a. der Erschließung des Potenzials von Orgeln mit elektronischer und gemischter Klangerzeugung widmet.
Rost unterrichtete außerdem an der Royal Academy of Music London, der Chopinakademie Warschau und dem Tschaikowsky-Konservatorium Moskau. Er konzertiert z. B. beim Rheingau Musikfestival, dem Bachfest Leipzig, in der Philharmonie St. Petersburg oder im Konzerthaus Berlin.
2012-2014 war Gunther Rost Organist in Residence bei den Bamberger Symphonikern.
Seine Diskografie beinhaltet u. a. eine Petr Eben-Gesamteinspielung und die erste Orgeleinspielung von Chopins 24 Préludes op. 28.
